Structure Fire Port Kent Apartment - Tower 359 Requested

GABE DICKENS/P-R PHOTO

District No. 3 Tower 359 was requested to the scene of a working apartment fire in Port Kent (Keeseville), NY late Thursday evening.  The nearly century old building, once utilized as a hotel and converted to apartment building was well involved upon T-359 arrival.  Allegedly igniting in the attic area of the structure, a working fire was transmitted upon Keeseville units’ arrival, with requests for assistance from several area departments including a Tower from South Plattsburgh FD and D3FD.  T-359 was released from the scene by Keeseville command at approximately 01:45 hrs.  The cold conditions made fighting the blaze difficult with frozen apparatus, hose lines, and personnel.

D3FD Engine 351 provided stand-by coverage for Keeseville Fire District throughout the incident.

NYSP assist I-87 Closure due to Ice Conditions on Roadway

The First Structure fire of 2014 proved to be a stubborn one - on january 3rd at approximately 06:45 hrs the district no. 3 fd was dispatched to reports of a possible structure fire at a single story wood frame residential home across from D3fd station #1.

Upon arrival on scene by chief 350, heavy smoke was observed pushing from the eves and doorways.  an all hands was requested for D3fd, and additional mutual aid was also requested at that time, bringing in two more companies in addition to the automatic mutual aid.

temperatures in the -30 degree range made fighting the fire difficult as hand lines, trucks, and equipment froze or became inoperable.  the temperatures and conditions also lead to the injuries of six firefighters on scene.  two firefighters were treated and released for minor smoke inhalation, and four firefighters were treated and released for injuries sustained by slipping and or falling on the ice.

The home was a total loss, however, all 10 family members were able to escape without harm.

A sincere thank you to all that responded and worked in the frigid conditions for hours on end Friday evening well into saturday morning.  all help was greatly appreciated!
